The Limacodidae family, slug catterpillars, are the most morphologically diverse and oddest appearing group of caterpillars in North America. They have a highly variable body plan and their heads are often retracted and hidden from view. A few species have spines which can deliver a very painful sting. They often eat smooth-leafed trees and shrubs.
